This idea has been rotting my brain for the last year, and now I have time to write it down. I've moved some things around in time and replaced some things for the story. Sam essentially has the worst case of "main character syndrome." This is literally just fun for me, so please don't take it too seriously. I've put references from across all forms of media in here, so I hope y'all catch it. While on the Hail Mary, during their bimonthly check up on Erid's star to ensure that the Astrophage is in check, Rocky and Dr. Ryland Grace witness a blood red shooting star fly by the ship. Mary suddenly speaks up, identifying what should just be a meteor as a life form. Without even thinking, Grace steers the ship after the "shooting star". The duo sees it crash into some asteroids and its bright light fades out on impact, in place of the light lies a man... a man covered in blood.
