Piltover’s Defender of Tomorrow dies on Wednesday evening. By Thursday, the announcement hits the morning gazette, and it won’t leave the news cycle until well past the Sunday edition.
Zaun’s Machine Herald scoffs the first time he reads it, tossing the stained and torn paper that his apprentice brought down the conveyor behind his shoulder. He is rewiring his left arm again, trying to iron out why his sensors detect a microsecond’s delay between the synapses firing in his brain and the acknowledgement by his mechanical nerves.
“Natural causes,” he scoffs. “He is what? Sixty years old? Men that rich do not die that young.”

That they were always more like one creature than two, codependent to a fault, and now that Jayce has died he’s left Viktor with a necrotic half-self. Recommended treatment: surgical debridement, amputation, maggots and a lobotomy–) has been burned away and kept from infecting the rest of his body.His hands are steady for what feels like the first time in days. Clarity is a balm upon his fever-slick mind. He imagines emerging from a chrysalis, whole for the first time. An independence he did not realize he was lacking, finally granted. Being reborn, he thinks, will be beautiful. His limbs are heavy, the weight of the metal apparent with each step he takes toward the door. He imagines it is because they are holding too much inside – a crab outgrowing its shell, a snake constricted by its own unshed skin. The Machine Herald does exist, somewhere underneath all of what is Viktor. He just needs to let him out.”

Summary
Kurapika was determined to get sober, this time. He was willing to put in the work, go to meetings, actually try. He couldn't keep going the way he was going—clawing his way through survival, and leaving a wake of destruction in his path as he did so. He'd had enough of being miserable for ten lifetimes. And staying away from him was his best possible chance at getting anywhere close to peace. Kurapika thought he really could do it. He had his first taste of hope in what felt like years—one that wasn't brought about by a synthetic chemical, at least.
And maybe he could've done it. He'd never get to know, since there seemed to be a conspiracy working against him.

"Alright, asshole," says Jason and plunks a folder down directly on the keyboard of Tim's laptop. "I'm calling in that IOU."
Tim doesn't startle, not visibly. But all at once there's a batarang in his hand, the blade gleaming sharp. It takes him a second to register who the intruder actually is before he gives Jason a lingering, suspicious sidelong glance and tucks it away again.
"What IOU?" says Tim. "And how'd you get in here?"
He looks like shit, frankly. There are dark smudges under his eyes, and he's lost weight since Jason's seen him last. From the coffee cups scattered around the desk, it's probably even odds that he's on at least 24 hours without sleep.
"I work in mysterious ways," declares Jason. "By which I mean your window's open. You get kind of careless when you haven't slept, Timbo."
