Toji parts his lips and feels the sharp curve of Gojo's fingernail press down then in, and when Gojo says "ah" Toji drops his jaw even lower and tilts his head up so Gojo can take a long, hard look down his throat and Toji feels victorious when he hears Gojo's breath hitch. He stays still as Gojo slips another finger in and he can feel the calloused tips rub against the grooves of his palate, slide along his gums as Gojo scissors his fingers back and forth so they stretch Toji's jaw even further, spit pooling under his tongue, threatening to spill out and and onto Gojo's delicate hand, and there's a small gasp from Gojo when it does, watery strands of saliva running down his wrist and splattering in pathetic droplets on the cement floor.

What follows isn't a grand prophetic quest, but a quieter, stubborn one: Elowen begins chasing half-whispers and forgotten lore about why the sun burns a vampire spawn who refused ascension. Ruins, odd priests, strange books, wrong questions in the wrong temples—little threads she calls "research" and he calls "madness," even as he continues to follow her lead.
Afterdawn is the stretch of road where nothing huge seems to happen from the outside: campfires, small jobs, detours, close calls, and two people circling something they have no words for yet. Underneath, Elowen is pulling on something old and bright and dangerous.
Eventually the thread catches and by the end, the road looks nothing like it did at the start.
