Which is one of the most dangerous jobs on the planet. Yet, despite this fact I never thought anything would actually happen. I was on a safe ship with a very skilled crew after all.
Nature doesn’t care about such things, as disaster struck. I didn’t expect to live when I fell into those icy depths, yet somehow I managed to. For once it made me glad I was forced into Girl Scouts as a kid. Though those simple survival skills definitely didn’t prepare me for half of the things I would encounter.

Her stomach sank. “Then it is a cruel word and you should not use it. Especially in regards to yourself.” She could not imagine thinking of anyone in such a way. Like a tool to be discarded when its usefulness had run out.
His eyes slid away, expression pinched. “It is what I am.”
She locked her jaw. “Who you are, not what you are. The concept itself is…” His eyes snapped back to hers, unblinking. The color was unsettling. It reminded her of the sulfur springs hidden in the steep glacier valleys, far North of the wall. Chunks of gypsum. “…a shattered blade can be reforged, the leather of worn boots repurposed for patchwork. There is nothing that exists in this world without value.”
His movement and breath were arrested, like a hare just before you loosed your arrow. The cartilage of his throat shifted beneath the skin. -
