You've seen it. A fic formatted like a classified document. A chapter that looks like a real social media feed. An interactive game, somehow, inside an AO3 work. You clicked the kudos button. You thought: how.

This is the tutorial that answers that.

A beginner-friendly guide to HTML and CSS on AO3 — no prior coding experience required. By the end of this series, you'll know enough to write formatted fics, build your own workskins, style your entire AO3 interface, and maybe make something that makes other people stop and think how.

    Summary

The nights were already cold and Berlin's streets were poorly lit, but Shane didn't mind. Berlin wasn't a pretty city; apartment blocks repeated themselves in washed-out mustard tones, aseptic blues and greens, off-putting reds. The windows of the newer buildings were so small he wondered if those rooms even got any light.

Now that he thought about it, he could barely remember Hannover's architecture. He'd never paid attention. Hannover simply was.

How many things in his life simply 'were'? When was the last time something had demanded his full attention?

Or: Shane and Ilya meet in an erotic massage parlor in Berlin in 2012. They're both sex workers.

Or: an exploration of desire as a world-building force.

How have I not already bookmarked this one? I really really thought I had. One of my absolute favorites, such a beautifully clear and intentional voice, the narrative style informs story in a really specific and emotionally resonant way. The feelings and sensory experience is so visceral and beautiful and their emotional evolution feels real.

    Excellent read

    Summary

The best way to describe this work, I think, is as a novelization of the television series told from Ilya Rozanov's point of view. What happens in the series will happen, more or less, in this work.

Please note, I did read both Heated Rivalry and The Long Game by Rachel Reid, but that was some time ago and my recollection of them is spotty at best. Because they are novels and this is a written story, I did NOT consult the books in order to reduce the chance that I would inadvertently plagiarize them. That means that where the television series leaves a gap in the narrative, I may fill it with something very different than what happens in the books. We will all end up at the cottage, but some of us are taking a slightly different path to get there.

This novelization means that potentially triggering things that happen in the series (like mental health issues) will happen in this work. NOTE, HOWEVER, no new issues will be added in this work. No one dies. No one is outed. No one is assaulted. This is just the story of the show as if it were from Ilya's point of view.

    Summary

After I retold the television show Heated Rivalry from the point of view of Ilya Rozanov, my brain decided I needed to write the exact same thing, but from the point of view of Shane Hollander, so I not only did I need to match the show, but also my own prior work. WHEE!

So that's what this is: a novelization of the television show that is ALSO a companion piece to Bad Thing.

I did read both Heated Rivalry and The Long Game by Rachel Reid, but that was some time ago and my recollection of them is spotty at best. Because they are novels, I did NOT consult the books in order to reduce the chance that I would inadvertently plagiarize them. One of my all time favorite Hollanov stories. Immaculate from beginning to end. If you're wondering about the novelization of the show aspect specifically, yes it's worth it. Yes it's worth it 🔥

    Summary

Yuna getting stuck in an elevator with Ilya for two hours doesn't change everything... but it changes some things. Like Yuna getting to be on a first-name basis with Ilya a full year before her son is.

(Part 2 (the smutty part) is not actually essential reading if you are not in the mood for smut!)

One of my all time favorite canon lateral au's

Both Shane's autistic transition anxiety and difficulty changing course and his bamf decisive brilliant loyal jock natures are here

    Maybe my favorite Shane Characterization

    Nobody is being infantalized

The parts that are supposed to be emotionally suspenseful are nail biting, the comedy is hilarious, and the emotional bits are gorgeous

Really fantastic writing, so worth reading the whole series
