Peter doesn't answer. Around the lump in his throat, he can't. He sets his jaw, but a hot tear rolls down his cheek anyway, followed by another, and another.
"I'm not crazy," he whispers.
"Of course not, you're simply unwell."

When Peter finds himself in an unfamiliar place, with no memory of how he came to be there, they tell him he has relapsed. They tell him Spider-man is just a character he invented to cope with trauma, that everything that has happened to him over the last two years is a figment of his imagination.
But Peter knows the truth.

His senses were buzzing like a bug he couldn’t see, hair stood on edge but no clear indication of danger. Natasha stalks forward, she’s tense but doesn’t look particularly worried. Peter tried to reel himself back in, even out his rapid heartbeat and grip at his haywire power.
It was all for not, as Bucky speaks up from across the room, his confusion evident.

Tony sits back, and his attention is back on Peter now, and he’s giving him that same look he’s been sending his way for days. “Did you sleep in class? In History? Because May and I can teach you history just fine. We’ve got books. And brains. And memories.”
Peter snorts, and feels a little sad at the same time. “Nah,” he says, scooting down in his seat. “I didn’t sleep.”
Tony hums and Peter can hear the anxiety in it, no matter how he tries to mask it.
“It’s fine,” Peter says again, chewing on the inside of his cheek. That’s gonna be a new mantra, apparently, because he keeps saying it without even meaning to. Tony gives him a long look, and finally starts driving out of there. Peter stares at him, and every blink is like the flick of a flame against his skin. Why does not sleeping hurt? He should just pass out, at this rate. That’s how these things should work.

Homecoming AU.
Ben and May divorced before Peter’s parents died, so when Ben is murdered Peter goes into foster care. It takes just a tiny taste of superpowers for Peter to decide he doesn’t want to put up with his horrible foster father anymore—the streets are infinitely more appealing. All he wants is to be Spider-Man anyway.
So he leaves.
Simple.
Simple, that is, until Iron Man needs Spider-Man’s help. He sees the back of Peter’s head first. His heart lurches into his throat. The kid’s curls are too long, matted - a testament to the fact that he’s lived the last year in less than ideal conditions. Peter stands facing away from the door in a cell not dissimilar to the one Loki was kept in so many years ago, and the sight turns his stomach. Peter doesn’t deserve to be locked up like an intergalactic war criminal.
“Peter?” Bruce calls, far too cautious, too gentle. “Someone’s here to see you, buddy.”
It isn't as bad as Tony thought. It's worse.

Exactly one year after the fact, Tony takes a call at four in the morning, heart in his throat and hands trembling. Steve says through the speaker, voice clear but clearly shaken: “Don’t freak out - but you need to come to the compound. Now.”
Tony’s first thought is that he needs to implement some sort of standardized what not to do when you call Tony Stark at four in the morning training for the rest of the team, rule number one being not to start the call with the phrase ‘don’t freak out.’
His first word is a groggy, “Shit.”
