Summary
Through the window Francis watched the shops and office buildings crawl by. A streetlight was out at one corner, and in the new dark the window showed his reflection. He wondered if that was how James saw him. A watery shadow, a face invisible in the light.
Francis takes a little blue pill on the way home from dinner. James doesn't know. Then they get stuck in traffic.

Summary
Before the rescue, and before James’s body had begun to break down in earnest, he’d started to find the nighttime cold on the shale unbearable. He’d shiver for hours before passing out from exhaustion—excruciating, when every movement caused him a spark of pain. One night the cold was particularly sharp—the flaps of their tent snapped loud as thunderclaps in the unforgiving wind—and he’d been shocked to feel his cot dip behind him, Francis’s solid form pressing up against his back.
“Francis,” he’d said, heart pounding, “what are you doing?”
“Whisht,” Francis had hissed. “Can’t sleep for the chattering of your teeth. Now rest.”

Summary
Captain Fitzjames was positively buoyant. “Here is what I shall do for you, Francis. Since you are determined to see your Miss Cracroft again, and to gain a private audience – perhaps renew any lingering affections that have burned bright ere these icy winters – then I shall play the role with gusto, so you may endeavor to practise this encounter prior to our journey home.”
A brief silence fell over the dining table. Captain Crozier’s countenance was nothing short of dumbfounded.
“I pray you repeat yourself, sir.”

Summary
James teetered, unintentionally leaning most of his weight into whoever’d caught him, and the two of them staggered until they fell against a brick wall. James had one fist in the man’s buttery leather jacket and another at the front of his jumper, and as he pulled his gaze up to look at the man’s face, the bottom of his stomach fell out.
“Professor Crozier,” he choked, flushing vibrantly red. Francis was staring down at him with wide eyes and parted lips, his mouth fashioned into a lax ‘o’ of surprise that had absolutely no right to work James up the way it did. “I—I’m so sorry; I didn’t see you.”
