    Summary

Louisa and River just want to eat some pizza and drink away the week at Slough House. Instead their evening ends with a bomb, a near miss, and a sprint through the city and Louisa’s blood staining River’s hands.

Just another Friday night for the Slow Horses. It’s a good thing they have each other to lean on — and a shame that neither of them are very good at it.

For the Slow Horses Big Bang.

For the "Didn't know they were injured" square of Bad Things Happen Bingo.

    Summary

Louisa thinks she’s finally found a path out of Slough House; an escape that feels more and more necessary after the one person that made it bearable disappeared; because her stupid friend, maybe her only friend, who was always racing off and getting himself in trouble, without stopping to think, without stopping to tell her that he wasn’t lying dead in a bathtub, chunks of his face peeling off the wall, had been missing for over a year after being kidnapped at gunpoint from an Mi5 convoy on Gresham Street.

But when she gets caught up in an attack on her new workplace, Louisa is certain she’s only barely meeting the promise she’d made not to die in Slough House; until she recognises the dark hooded figure covered in blood slaughtering her colleagues, and deals with a difficult reunion.

    Summary

There’s a story, to tell David Cartwright, the Old Bastard, facilitator of the future of Les Arbes.

That his daughter, flighty and spiteful and rebellious, had finally taken things too far by running off and having a baby with one of the worst spectres of his career. In buying her freedom, David had bought his seven-year-old grandson too. In exchange for this grand, unasked for act of heroic sacrifice, Cartwright felt entitled to spend his summers with the boy, felt he deserved the chance to love him, and teach him, and mould him in his own image to follow in his footsteps and uphold the family legacy.

But River has a family already. A legacy to live up to, a father lighting his path, sheparding him toward his future.

Because the story is a lie, a cover; and every summer, River Harkness leaves his home at Les Arbes, to become River Cartwright.

A simple double agent. As any good enemy deserved.

    Summary

River Cartwright has lived his life separated into two, neat boxes, and expended much effort to ensuring as little overlap as possible.

There was River Cartwright; human, his grandparents' loving son, who made sensible decisions and was normal and reasonable and (conceivably) employable at the highest levels of Government security.

And then there was, well. The large wolf that he turned into on a monthly basis.

River has survived for decades under the guidance of his grandfathers teaching, keeping him self hidden, keeping himself controlled, protecting his secret at all costs.

But when a stranger, looking and smelling impossibly familiar, comes to his grandfather’s door to try and kill him, River is propelled into new territory in a peculiar French commune, and learns answers to questions he never thought to ask.

    Summary

    The problem is River.

Or, more specifically, it’s the way that every time Louisa blinks, the afterimage of River laying on the ground between those shelves, covered in debris, is burned into the backs of her eyelids. It wouldn’t have been so bad, probably, if he hadn’t had to take off immediately to deal with that folder, or if Louisa had said fuck the debrief and gone with him. If they hadn’t been separated right after making it out of the hatch, they — or, at least, Louisa would probably be fine.

    But they were. Separated.

    --

Post season 3. Louisa and River share a bowl of dry cereal, a difficult conversation, and a bed, in that order.
