It wasn’t enough that Kevin had to let their carefully guarded secret slip to Riko, all of those years of whispered French blown to pieces. He had to twist the knife into Jean’s back by dragging him into his escape. Jean Moreau is no stranger to atoning for other people’s sins, and he would do it all again if it meant that Kevin got out, if it meant that he is safe.
Like he has done every morning to these hellish sixteen hour days, the first thing Jean does is reach for his phone.
There is nothing from Kevin, just like the last six mornings.

Andrew scoffed quietly to himself and set the phone on speaker to light his cigarette. Muffled, he said, “He better be eye candy if I’m coming to that dump.”
Andrew inhaled deep and closed his eyes for a moment before blowing the smoke out through his teeth. On the other end of the phone, just as he was bringing the cigarette back for another drag, he heard Wymack say, “Hey, my son wants to know if you’re cute.”
Andrew coughed up his lung at that surprise, but he didn’t miss the way that a distant voice piped up with “I want to say yes, sir.”

He puts Neil Josten to rest along with the memories of the Foxes. Locks the box containing the last year of his life up and tucks it back behind the thousands of other things he’s hidden from himself over the years. Another life left behind, another name and another story tucked away.
His father is dead, he’s going to tear everything he left behind apart. He’s won, hasn’t he? Done what his mother had always deemed impossible. He’s outlived the monster and he’s as free as he’ll ever be now.
Eyes shut on a hospital bed in the city he hates, Nathaniel is swallowed by his sorrow and his shoulders shake with a pain he will never be allowed to let go of.

Essek goes home, and there is no one waiting at his door. This should be some manner of relief. But his towers haven't felt like a safe haven for a long time now, long before errant scourgers appeared to harass him with strange questions. He misses the immediacy of that threat, prefers it over the slow and indulgent terror of whatever punishment is coming for him, someday soon.
He tells himself that he misses only that, the simplicity of being unsafe in the company of predators, and that he does not miss the company itself.
