Rui finally paused in his thought process. Truth be told, the type of switch didn't quite matter to him, nor did the many nuances he had considered. In the end, he had a single, unchanging answer.

Okay, so if it wasn’t obvious this is a Re:Zero fanfic! I’ve loved Re:Zero for a really long time and I honestly don’t know what the fic sphere is like in this fandom, but I need to scratch an itch so I'm writing this. I got inspired by what’s going on in season 4, but I don’t plan for this fic to have season 4 spoilers. But there will be spoilers for season 1, 2, and 3 (up to arc 5)! So be warned!

After hearing about how Asta summoned a super cool demon-like power to fight after he had gone to the Witches's Forest, Luck really, really, really wants to fight him!
But Asta doesn't know how he awakened that power! So, Luck, being the good senpai that he is, resolves to experiment until he finds a way to make Asta use the demon!
His experiment goes wrong. Extremely wrong.

What.
The collective, single thought of the entire Black Bulls barring Asta was one of complete confusion. Something was off in the force there, that was for sure. A few of them put their hands on their chins, deep in thought as they attempted to figure out what had happened.
And all at once, they realized what was so bizarre.
Asta assured calmly. He didn’t jump up in mock offense, he didn’t belt out his annoyance, he didn’t seem at all frustrated. And most of all, he was quiet. Asta. Quiet. Those words…they just seemed so wrong to think about together.

Summary
The basic concept for this AU is that, while Asta does get his grimoire as in canon, he doesn't get into the magic knights because Yami gets food poisoning the night before the exam and spends the day at home.
He doesn't want to return to Hage right away, though, so he winds up spending some more time in the capital, doing odd jobs using his physical strength... and by chance, Owen happens to notice him using his quasi-supernatural life advice abilities on other civilians. There are never enough trained therapists, since it's generally considered a boring speciality, so Owen offers him a job as an apprentice recovery mage in the royal capital's hospital.
It's not the same as being a magic knight at all, but the main driver behind Asta's dreams has always been helping people, so he decides he might as well give it a shot!
(Also featuring Asta being almost magically lovable, and Liebe trying his darnedest to protect the kid he's decided is his baby brother despite very possibly being older.)
